When I see those dieters eating half of a cold grapefruit for breakfast with a packet of splenda or some other artificial sweetener, I cringe… what a perfectly good way to ruin this delicious treat! Grapefruits don’t have to be diet food. They can be super awesome, finger licking, suck up the last drop good. If you haven’t broiled a grapefruit before, you must. This is a special winter treat that my mom used to make for me on cold winter mornings. Ah the sweet (and burnt) smell of burning sugar. Every time I make one of these it still gives me that homey feeling. At first I thought this recipe was just to simple to post, but after watching Andrew devour grapefruit after grapefruit, I remembered that this is exactly what this blog is all about, simple recipe deliciousness.
(that happen to be vegan.)
Brown Sugar Broiled Grapefruit:
1, 2, 3, or 362 Grapefruits (however many you want to eat)
A Spoonful of Brown Sugar per Grapefruit Half
Using a grapefruit knife, or a steak knife (yes these still have a purpose in the vegan world), cut around each segment so they are all free, but leave them still in the grapefruit. This may seem a little annoying but it’s totally worth the effort. If you come across a seed, now is a good time to pop that out.
Spoon on your brown sugar and rub it around if you want. Now pop the grapefruit under the broiler for about 5-8 minutes. Some juices will drizzle out and burn, but thats totally cool. Your grapefruit will be perfect when the edges start to brown a bit.
