Ingredients

  • 3 cups plant-based milk (such as soy or oat)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2–4 tablespoons white sugar to taste
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup vegan chocolate chips (or 3 oz / 85 g chopped vegan chocolate)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: Vegan whipped cream, vegan marshmallows, chocolate shavings, vegan chocolate syrup, crushed candy canes, or vegan marshmallow fluff

Instructions

  • Warm the milk: Pour the plant-based milk into a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat until hot but not simmering.
  • Add the cocoa: Whisk in the cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons sugar, and salt until smooth and well combined.
  • Melt the chocolate: Add the vegan chocolate chips and continue whisking until completely melted and the hot chocolate is smooth, creamy, and glossy. Do not let it boil.
  • Finish with vanilla: Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Taste and add 1 to 2 tablespoons more sugar if you prefer a sweeter hot chocolate.
  • Serve: Pour into mugs and top with vegan whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or your favorite toppings. Enjoy hot!

Notes

Extra-rich hot chocolate: Use a rich, creamy plant-based milk such as barista-style oat milk, or replace ½ cup of the milk with vegan heavy cream or full-fat canned coconut milk.
Mocha hot chocolate: Whisk in ¼ teaspoon instant espresso powder along with the cocoa powder. It won't make the hot chocolate taste strongly of coffee; it simply deepens the chocolate flavor.
Peppermint hot chocolate: Add ⅛ teaspoon peppermint extract along with the vanilla. Peppermint extract is strong, so a little goes a long way.
Sweetness: With 2 tablespoons sugar, this hot chocolate has a deep, less-sweet chocolate flavor. For a sweeter, more classic hot chocolate, use up to 4 tablespoons. The sweetness will also vary depending on the chocolate you use, so I recommend starting with less and adding more to taste.
Storage: Store leftover hot chocolate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, whisking well before serving.
