This Homemade Dog Treats Recipe is quick and easy to make! With just 3 ingredients: peanut butter, carrot, and oats. They are so cheap to make and are healthy for your dogs too. And most important of all, dogs LOVE them!!

I've shared several homemade dog treat recipes because my dog Chickpea loves them! When I give her the option between store-bought dog treats and homemade, she always chooses the homemade treats. I think it's because the ingredients are so much fresher, there are no preservatives, and of course, they are made with love. ❤️
See how much she loves them!? ⬇️ Haha. Not only are these peanut butter dog treats a fave of Chickpea's, but they are SO affordable too. With just peanut butter, carrots, and oats, you can make an entire big bag of dog treats (about 28 medium-sized treats) for about $2.25. For a similar bag of dog treats bought at the store, it would cost around $16!
This dog biscuit recipe is made up of 3 simple ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen: peanut butter, carrots, and oats.
Peanut Butter: make sure that the peanut butter you use is natural peanut butter. The only ingredient should be peanuts. Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol (which is poisonous to dogs). And do not use processed peanut butter that contains added oils, sugars, and salt. That stuff is basically frosting and is bad for our pups. Natural peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fats for our dogs as well as vitamins B and E, and niacin. I almost always include peanut butter in my homemade dog treats recipes because pooches just love it! It's also a great binder.
Carrots: carrot peels are rich in nutrients, so I don't bother peeling the carrots first. Then I just boil them to soften them. If you prefer, you can use frozen cooked carrots (thaw them first), or canned cooked carrots. Carrots are high in essential nutrients, making them an excellent addition to a dog's diet. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which supports healthy vision, and immune function. Additionally, the high fiber content in carrots promotes digestive health.
Oats: you can use whole oats, 1- minute oats, or instant oats, as long as there aren't any added sugars or other ingredients. Oats are very healthy for our pooches as they are high in fiber, and contain vitamin B, and omega-6 fatty acids among other good nutrients.
How to make Peanut Butter & Carrot Homemade Dog Treats:
Preheat your oven to 300F (150C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Add the carrots to a medium pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, 5 - 10 minutes. Drain the carrots.
Add the boiled carrots along with the oats and peanut butter to a food processor and mix well until the carrots and oats are broken down and a soft sticky dough forms.
If your homemade dog treats dough is too wet, add more oats. If your dough is too dry, add more peanut butter or carrots.
Remove from the food processor and place the dough on a sheet of parchment paper. Place another sheet of parchment paper on top, use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to about ½ inch (1.3 cm) thick.
Cut the dough into treats. I used this bone-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use any cookie cutter, or just cut them into squares with a knife or pizza cutter. Gather any dough scraps, and reroll to make more treats.
Bake the homemade dog treats for 35 - 40 minutes, until the treats are dry and lightly browned on the bottoms, (they will still feel soft when first removed from the oven). The treats will get a bit firmer once they are cool. Let cool before giving one to your pup. Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or I like to store them in an airtight container in my freezer which makes them firmer and makes them stay fresh for a long time.

These look adorable and so easy to make! Peanut butter and carrot is such a great combo — carrots are fantastic for dental health too. Making homemade treats is such a lovely way to know exactly what your dog is eating. One thing worth mentioning is to always double-check the peanut butter label for xylitol, as some brands use it as a sweetener and it's toxic to dogs. Can't wait to try these with my pup!

We added 2 bananas, fig molasses ,extra oats and natural honey peanut butter to the recipe. It made it taste so much better and they actually like them much better. Plus it is still very healthy for them.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
That sounds like a great tweak, Erica!

I have an eight week old puppy. He loves these. Obviously because he is a small dog. I break them into little pieces for training, which are perfect. Some of the training treats are too hard for his little teeth and these are perfect. He already knows how to sit. Now if he only learned how to stop fighting me because he’s teething he would be the perfect puppy. Lol. Instead of making these because it makes such a big recipe and next time I’m only making a half a recipe because he’s so tiny. Can I freeze the dough without it getting crumbly or should I make them all at one time?
Jess @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Other readers have had success freezing baked cookies and then just thaw and use. Hope that helps!

These dog treats are super easy to make. Not only that, they are a healthy alternative to store bought treats. My babies love them, even my picky eater.

Why size cutter did you use?? I made 3 sizes but I need the size in order to calculate the nutrition!!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Patti! From the pictures I am estimating that the dog treats are 2 1/2 to 3 " long. You could use an app like Myfitnesspal to calculate nutrition of the entire recipe then just divide it by the amount of treats you made. Enjoy!

I didn't have a cookie cutter, so I made small cookies instead. I added a can of green beans for moisture, because I didn't want to add too many more calories. They turned out amazing!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Wonderful!! SO happy you enjoyed them, thanks for your review Lee 🙂

made these for my 3-toothed senior pup. my peanut butter was on the dry side, and i think i used too many oats (mine were already pre-pulverized, so i should have used less to start); i compensated by adding about 1T of coconut oil and a couple of small ripe bananas (i didn't feel like boiling more carrots). immediately after baking, i used a pizza cutter to make "French fries" and cut some of those further into tiny squares. my dog and i ate too many that night and got gassy belly aches, so subsequent servings were dispensed in moderation 😉
i think this recipe could accommodate other substitutions or additions easily, like sweet potato, grated cheese, maybe even mashed sardines!

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I was so pleased to find this lovely, simple recipe. I will be visiting my friend's new 10 w/o puppy, later today, and wanted to take a little gift to the pup, and the older dog. I made three different size treats, and tried one of the small ones, myself. They are surprisingly tasty!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Chris! That’s so thoughtful of you—those pups are lucky to have you as a visitor! I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe (and even gave one a try yourself 😄). Hope the dogs love their homemade treats! 🐶💛
Pepper says
can u use a dehydration fir this and will they last longer in a foodsealer bags like regular jerky
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Pepper! Great question. Yes, you can use a dehydrator to make the treats extra dry and crisp, which can help them last longer. Once fully dried, storing them in vacuum-sealed bags (like jerky) should definitely extend their shelf life even more. Just be sure they’re completely dried out before sealing to avoid any moisture buildup. Hope your pup loves them!

I made these for my dogs today and they were crazy for them!! I grow my own carrots and freeze them so it was super easy and inexpensive. Thank you so much!

Oh that's wonderful!! I bet the dogs will love them even more with the homegrown carrots!
