These homemade Apple Pie Dog Treats are easy to make, with just 5 simple ingredients. They are SO much cheaper than store-bought treats, and are full of good-for-your-dog ingredients. Dogs love them! And, bonus points: when you bake these treats it makes your whole house smell like a fresh apple pie! 🍎 🥧

These homemade dog treats are perfect for spoiling your furry friend. Made with just oats, unsweetened applesauce, cinnamon, coconut oil, and a bit of flour (to help them hold together), they are super affordable to make at home. My dog, Chickpea LOVES these Apple Pie Dog Treats! She gobbles these up so quickly, and with the added cinnamon they even help freshen her breath! (No judgment Chickpea).

These treats are perfect to spoil your own pooch, or they also make a lovely little gift for your favorite furry friend, (they are even safe to snack on for humans 😂). I've received requests to make a dog treat recipe without peanut butter, so that's how this recipe came about, but they are also cruelty-free, egg-free, preservative-free, great for your dogs health and made with love, I feel so good about giving them to her, and I bet your dog will feel the same way!

    Ingredients:

    • Apple Sauce: Unsweetened apple sauce, contains vitamins A and C, which are essential for a dog's immune system and overall health.
    • Cinnamon: has anti-inflammatory properties, is rich in antioxidants, has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, can aid in digestion, and helps improve cognitive function. It also freshens breath!
    • Oats: are high in fiber, packed with essential nutrients, contain a good amount of protein, contribute to healthy skin and a shiny coat.
    • Coconut Oil: is great for your dog's skin and coat, can aid in digestion.
    • Flour: good for heart and skin health. Whole wheat or all-purpose flour is added for a bit of binding. If you're dog is sensitive to gluten you can use more oats or oat flour.

Add the oats to a food processor and grind until they reach a fine powder. (If you do not have a food processor, see the recipe notes for other options). Add the applesauce, coconut oil, and cinnamon and blend again. Lastly, add in the wheat flour to form a dough.

How to Make Apple Pie Dog Treats:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Add the oats to a food processor and grind until they reach a fine powder. (If you do not have a food processor, see the recipe instructions for other options). Add the applesauce, coconut oil, and cinnamon and blend again. Lastly, add in the wheat flour to form a dough.

Remove from the food processor and roll out on a lightly floured surface until about ¼" thick. I used a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use any cookie cutter shape, or just cut them into squares with a knife or pizza cutter.

Remove from the food processor and roll out on a lightly floured surface with a rolling pin until about ¼" thick. I used a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use any cookie cutter shape, or just cut them into squares or other fun shapes and slices with a knife or pizza cutter.

Lay the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until lightly golden on the bottom.

Lay the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until lightly golden on the bottom. They will still be a little soft to the touch but will harden completely once cooled.

Let cool before giving a slice of comfort food to your pup. Store these dog biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or I like to store them in my freezer to ensure they stay fresh a long time.

    Ingredients

    • 3 cups oats (old fashioned, 1-minute oats, or instant)
    • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
    • 3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • ¼ cup whole wheat or all-purpose flour, (plus more for dusting)
    US Customary - Metric

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Add the oats to a food processor and grind until they reach a fine powder. (If you do not have a food processor, see the recipe notes for other options). Add the applesauce, coconut oil, and cinnamon and blend again. Lastly, add in the wheat flour to form a dough.
    • Remove from the food processor and roll out on a lightly floured surface until about ¼" thick. I used a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use any cookie cutter shape, or just cut them into squares with a knife or pizza cutter.
    • Lay the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until lightly golden on the bottom. They will still be a little soft to the touch but will harden completely once cooled.
    • Let cool before giving one to your pup. Store them in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or I like to store them in my freezer to ensure they stay fresh a long time.

    Notes

If you do not have a food processor, you can still make these treats. Grind the oats up in a blender or coffee grinder, then add the ground oats to a bowl with the remaining ingredients to make a dough. Or you could buy oat flour and use that instead. You will need less oat flour as it is denser, so start with 2 cups and add more as needed.

The metric conversions seem to be off as 3 cups oats converts to the same quantity of grams as 1 cup applesauce, while 1/4 cup wheat flour converts to less than I would expect too. Can you please check if they’re correct?

Loki my miniature pinscher really loves these apple pie dog treats. He is an older dog so we really like to feed him good wholesome food. Thank you for this great recipe. I’m making my second batch today. I’m thinking of trying one of the peanut butter recipes next time.

Hi Gloria, oats are gluten-free so you are good to go! Just ensure that you are using certified gluten-free oats to be safe. You will want to substitute the whole wheat flour to keep them gluten free, I would recommend brown rice flour for that. I hope that helps!

Hi Jenna! You will need applesauce for this recipe, but you can easily make that from fresh apples in the microwave. Simply peel, core, and chop one medium apple. Place it in a microwave-safe bowl with 2 tablespoons of water, cover loosely, and microwave on high for 3-4 minutes until soft. Mash or blend until smooth, then let it cool slightly before using. Enjoy!

Please note: Some cinnamon can be bad for dogs. Ceylon Cinnamon – The bark of the Ceylon cinnamon tree is what is used to make Ceylon cinnamon. It is safe because it has low levels of courmarin, a natural organic chemical compound.
❌The Chinese Cinnamon (or Cassia Cinnamon)– The bark of the Chinese cinnamon tree is used to make cassia cinnamon. The higher levels of courmarin pose can potentially be harmful to the health of your dog, so you should avoid this type of cinnamon for your dog

Hi Kris, thanks for sharing. 🙂 I sourced my information from PetMD (link) "Because of its nutrients, cinnamon can be safe—and often beneficial—when baked into your pup’s treats in small amounts. Cinnamon is known for these health benefits: High in antioxidants, Reduces inflammation, Promotes heart health, Helps lower blood sugar levels, May relieve digestive discomfort" I hope that helps 🙂
