Turn this crispy tofu into a satisfying meal by adding it to a veggie wrap with hummus and your favorite fresh vegetables.

If you're looking for perfectly crispy tofu with a golden, crunchy exterior and a tender, chewy center, this is the recipe to bookmark. I make crispy tofu all the time because it goes with just about everything: grain bowls, salads, wraps, stir fries, curries, you name it. Whether you want pan-fried tofu, baked tofu, or air fryer tofu, this recipe works beautifully. Choose the cooking method that fits your mood (or how much time you have), and you'll end up with crispy, golden tofu every time. Toss it into your favorite meal, drizzle it with your favorite sauce, or honestly, just eat it straight off the pan. (I definitely do.)
If you're just getting started with tofu, you might also enjoy my complete guide on how to cook tofu, where I cover everything from choosing the right tofu to my favorite cooking methods.

Why This Is the Only Crispy Tofu Recipe You Need
- Golden and crispy every time: A light coating of cornstarch creates that irresistible crispy exterior without deep frying.
- Works with everything: We keep it simple with garlic powder and black pepper, which means this tofu works with pretty much any other flavor you pair it with.
- Three easy cooking methods: Pan-fry, bake, or air fry, it's always going to turn out perfect.

Ingredients for Crispy Tofu
- Extra-firm or firm tofu: Extra-firm tofu is a bit chewier, while firm tofu is slightly softer, but both crisp up beautifully. No need to press the tofu here. Since we're not marinating it, simply drain it and pat it dry with a clean towel if it seems especially wet. Want to learn more? Check out my guide on how to press tofu (and when you don't need to).
- Soy sauce: Use tamari for a gluten-free option.
- Light oil: You can omit the oil for an oil-free option; the tofu won't be as crispy, but it will get lightly crisp in the air fryer.
- Seasonings: Garlic powder adds savory flavor, while black pepper adds a gentle heat.
- Cornstarch: Creates the crispy coating. Potato starch is an excellent 1:1 substitute and actually gets even crispier.
How to Make Crispy Tofu

- Season the Tofu: Toss the tofu in a bowl with the soy sauce, oil, garlic powder, and black pepper. Toss gently until every piece is evenly coated.

- Pan-Fry: Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of neutral oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer without overcrowding the pan. Cook for 8 to 12 minutes, turning occasionally, until crispy and golden on all sides.

- Bake: Preheat your oven to 425°F. Spread the tofu onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

- Air Fry: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. Lightly grease the basket if needed, arrange the tofu in a single layer, and air fry for 10 to 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
Tips and Variations
- Gently toss to coat: If you stir too vigorously, the tofu will break apart. (This is especially true if you use firm instead of extra-firm tofu.)
- Don't overcrowd the pan: Give the tofu space so it crisps instead of steaming.
- Flip only after a crust forms: If the tofu sticks to the pan, it probably isn't ready yet. Once it's nicely browned, it will release much more easily.
- Customize the seasoning: This recipe is simple by design, making it a great base. Feel free to add smoked paprika, onion powder, cayenne, curry powder, or your favorite seasoning blend.

My husband and I loved this! We pan fried it and it turned out perfectly crispy. We ate several pieces right out of the pan, and ate the whole thing in one sitting.
Brenda says
I have made this numerous times in different variations. My favorite is the spicy version where I add chili peppers or cayenne powder. I’ve shared this with a friend for her air fryer, too. It’s a perfect versatile addition to so many recipes! Thanks for another great recipe, Sam! (I’d include a photo, but it did appears too fast!)
Shannon says
Delicious! Made this for the #augustcookwithSamchallenge. So glad I did!
Nancy says
So easy! This will surely be a frequent recipe used.
Emilie Rose says
This recipe is so easy, simple and genuinely foolproof! I love that it gives you three ways to make the tofu. My oven and air fryer were both occupied, so I pan-fried it — and it turned out perfectly! Such a versatile little recipe.
I turned mine into bao buns with maple sriracha tofu, Asian slaw, pickled veggies and an orange saffron sauce. SO good — sweet, spicy, tangy and fresh!
Cara says
This is a great recipe for snackable tofu! In the past, my air fryer tofu has ended up too starchy, dry and bland, or not at all crispy. This recipe led me to just the right amount of added starch and oil and it came out well. I think it still would have been *even better* if I had pan-fried, but I love the option to do the much easier air frying and still have it come out crunchy. I used it in the "chicken" salad sandwich and will DEFINITELY be making both recipes again!
Carol says
Made this the other night just for my husband (who is not vegan) and me. I am fortunate that he will eat anything that I put in front of him. I have to tell you after the first bite he started raving about how good it was and that he’ll eat this ANYTIME I want to make it!
I served it bowl style over brown rice with carrots and edamame and Sam’s delicious peanut sauce!
Can’t wait to make it again, this time for my children who are vegan!!:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
Thanks Sam!
Marco says
This is such an easy & convenient but still tasty recipe. It's perfect when I'm scrambling to make food and I've got a block of extra firm tofu in the fridge (which I usually do). I made this using both the pan-fry and baking methods, and they both come out so well! Though I'm partial to the pan-fried since it comes out crispier.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Yay! So happy you’ve been enjoying it, Marco! 😊 I’m with you—the pan-fried version is my favorite when I want maximum crispiness!
Ian Wilson says
Been using this recipe for years Except I don't like garlic powder - tastes 'artificial'/chemical' to me. Use crushed real garlic.
Basic salt and pepper (lots of white) is also good.
Toss everything together in a plastic bag.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
So happy you’ve been enjoying the recipe, Ian! Fresh garlic sounds delicious too. 😊
Shanti says
Just made this for dinner, air-fried. I'm a long-time fan of your The Best Air Fryer Tofu (possibly the tofu I make most often) and although I love the flavour of that one, this one whipped up in a snap and came out so crisp, definitely perfect for incorporating into just about any recipe. I'll be making this one regularly for sure!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Yay!! I’m so happy you enjoyed this one too, Shanti!
Laurie says
I loved the tofu recipe and followed it exactly as written so the tofu was ready to go as soon as the cornstarch mix was ready, but there was no way I could get it to pour over the tofu! It was so hard immediately. I just tried to cover the cubes as well as I could by coating each cube by hand. Where did I go wrong????
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Laurie! You don’t need to make a cornstarch mixture for this recipe. First toss the tofu with the soy sauce, oil, garlic powder, and pepper, then sprinkle the dry cornstarch directly over the tofu and toss until evenly coated. There shouldn’t be anything to pour over the tofu. I hope that helps, and I’m glad you still enjoyed it!
Laurie W says
It was fantastic, like others, I ate most of it right out of the air fryer. I am not a very proficient cook, and knew that I must have done something wrong!!!
Maresa Goodin says
The consistency of the tofu was very crispy in the air fryer. I used liquid aminos instead of soy sauce and omitted the black pepper since my son is sensitive to it. I will have to try it again with soy sauce to see if it would have more flavor because it was a little bland for me. We used it in vegan Alfredo, and it worked perfectly with the sauce I made. I’ll definitely try it again soon because I love crispy tofu! Might add a dash of salt next time though.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
So glad you enjoyed the crispy texture! Liquid aminos can vary in saltiness/flavor, so definitely feel free to add a little salt to taste next time. I love the idea of serving it with vegan Alfredo!

***** The Crispy Tofu recipe creates tofu cubes that doesn't taste like tofu. A versitile vegan delight.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Molly! So happy you loved it! 😊

I made these in the air fryer and they came out so crispy. They didn’t even make it into a recipe, I just ate them straight away as is! I’ll definitely be making them again.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Jay! Haha, straight out of the air fryer is always a good sign! 😂 So happy you loved them!
Samantha says
I used the pan fried method and these were the perfect addition to my veggie lo mein!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Samantha! Yum! 😍 Crispy tofu with veggie lo mein sounds like the perfect combo. So happy you enjoyed it!
Beatriz says
Crispy? That’s an understatement, this tofu is so deliciously crispy and soft inside. I was going to bake it but decided to use my handy air fryer. I used soy sauce as indicated in the recipe, I usually use tamari because I like it- when I pan fried my breakfast pieces of tofu- not because I’m worried about being gluten-free. First I coated the tofu with the soy sauce and the oil, then dusted with the spices, then I used a small strainer to coat/dust/sprinkle just Like when you sprinkle powdered sugar on a cake and it worked perfectly! didn’t have any clumps.
I love it with soy sauce, I will be serving it as a topping of a Chinese style salad which will have orange wedges, cashew nuts and other veggies and of course with . Best Ever 5-Minute Peanut Sauce | It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken
Sam’s recipe crispy tofu is a keeper She never fails! is the best!.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Yay!! I’m so happy you loved it! 😍 And using a little strainer to sprinkle on the cornstarch is such a clever trick. That Chinese-style salad with peanut sauce sounds amazing!
AJ says
I used the air fryer recipe. This was fabulous. So easy to make and flavorful. I will definitely be making it again. Will toss this into a salad or bowl anytime.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi AJ! So happy you loved it! 😊 and I love tossing these into bowls and salads too!

I failed to make the recipe for July, because my husband constantly had Cowboy Caviar in the refrigerator, & I didn’t see the point in having two bean dishes at once. He’d finish it off, forget I told him not to make more, & make it again! I almost think that’s all he ate the entire month! : / So, I got a head start on August’s dish & made the crispy tofu last night. I have to have a cyst removed from my hand tomorrow, so I’ve been trying to prep a bunch of food for when I can’t use my hand, so this recipe was perfect!
I made a roasted, stuffed eggplant with tons of veggies & fake cheese & then topped it with the crispy tofu. It was wonderful! Mine wasn’t as crunchy as it should’ve been, but that’s my fault. I should’ve pressed it longer. I made it late & I was too tired to wait any longer. It was still delicious. I have no regrets. : )
I added paprika & a little liquid smoke & extra pepper. I always add extra spices. The next time I make it, I’ll press it longer & freeze it first. Tofu always turns out better for me when I do that. Still, this was excellent! Very happy with the result! : )
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi April! I’m so glad you got an early start on August’s challenge and loved the tofu. The stuffed eggplant sounds amazing! Wishing you a very speedy recovery with your hand tomorrow 💚
April Schofield says
Thank you! I actually typed that up in my notes on my phone. My husband had to send it in after the surgery! But, my hand is on the mend. Should get my stitches out this Tuesday! : )
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi April! Aww, that's dedication! 😊 I'm so glad your husband could help post it, and even happier to hear your hand is healing well. Wishing you a smooth recovery!
Dana says
These little tofu bites turned out perfect! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I chose the baked version and was not disappointed! I served it with some quinoa and broccoli for dinner but found myself back in the kitchen snacking on them!!
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Dana! Haha, snacking on them straight from the kitchen is always a good sign! 😂 So happy you loved the baked version!
Jamie says
This is definitely a staple recipe. It's so easy and hands off - the part that takes the longest is flipping the tofu to get it crispy on both sides. I also like that this can be a standalone protein, or goes with many other dishes as a side.
Sam Turnbull @ It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken says
Hi Jamie! So happy it’s become a staple! 😊 I love how versatile it is too, you can pair it with just about anything.
